Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most... More »

Just coming into its own, a complex effort with great sophistication. Black rasberry, ripe strawberry, dark cherry and smoked herbs with a clean and well defined body and a subtle richness. Quite a nice wine.

Healthy deep medium ruby with some browning. T-zone (tapenade, tobacco and thyme) nose. Good news is that the grouchy phase this wine displayed a couple of years ago (marauding Mourvedre, inexpressive, with tannin and acid blocking the fruit) has passed, and this is perfectly pleasant to drink. Unfortunately it's not yet blossoming, hasn't developed the complexity of which it is capable, and seems a bit soft in the midpalate. Try again in a year or two.

I thought this was a fantastic bottle of Beaucastel, and one which I would be completely fooled over if I tasted it blind. Perhaps the most heady, youthful and exuberant nose of the evening, dazzling with pure kirsch liqueur, coffee, fruitcake and fig notes that had such a clean, pure and bountiful profile that I almost never associate with this producer (except for the 1998). The palate was thick, but bright, offering a hefty dose of imbedded Provencal flavors that were underscored by a brilliant minerality. One of the few wines that we tasted that I believe will improve even more with further cellaring, an absolute winner

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
