France - Burgundy - Cote de Nuits - Chambolle Musigny

Red Pinot Noir - Grand Cru
Producer Notes

Comte de Vogue is often considered the greatest wine estate in Chambolle-Musigny. It traces its history back to 1450 and amazingly, after 20 generations, the same family still runs the show. The domaine owns 7.25 hectares of the Le Musigny vineyard; these average 40 years old and are labeled Vieilles Vignes. The property also includes smaller holdings of Bonnes-Mares and Premier Cru... Still remarkably primary with a nose that is the crystalline essence of black cherry pinot sap though there are the initial hints of secondary aromas and spice notes now in evidence. Massively structured and opulent thick flavors with dense, ripe tannins that are completely buffered by all the extract. This is flat out great and still very much a baby though again, there are just the initial signs of maturity. In my view, this is the best de Vogüé Musigny since at least '71 and is a monument in the making as it will live for 50 years without breathing hard, particularly in magnum format. Multiple, and consistent, notes from 750 ml only.

Drink Dates 1995-2015

Comte de Vogue's clearest choice for 1993 is the Musigny Vieilles Vignes, which exhibits a Bordeaux-like structure and austerity. It is a deeply-colored, rich, medium-bodied wine with plenty of tannin, admirable purity, and a measured feel on the palate. Its rating reflects the quality of the wine if it matures into perfect harmony, which is not likely to happen before 2005. Assuming the fruit holds, it is capable of lasting for two decades. The 1993s produced at this renowned estate are backward, stern, structured wines that optimists will deem successful if the fruit holds and the tannin melts away.

Drink Dates 2002-2004

Spicy, exotic aromas and flavors wrap themselves around a powerful core of mouthfilling black cherry and plum. Jam-packed, and extraordinary for its length and integration of fine tannins. Should be smoothed out by 1999, but will probably be best after 2002 to 2004.--Pinot Noir Challenge.

GREAT wine. Brought this to a Vogue Musigny vertical. It was every bit the same level of pedigree as the 1971 and 1978. Could potentially surpass the 1978. The abundant structure of the vintage is apparent, but the sheer balance and concentration and sophistication of this wine is notable. Will be great.

After a short while, the nose opened to reveal untold depths of richness and complexity, befitting the Vogue Musignys. A strong, not subtle, but rather racy Grand cru, at least compared, as we did, to the more stately '91.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
