1990 Leoville Barton Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - St Julien - Red - Second Growth

France - Bordeaux - St Julien

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Leoville-Barton is one of the five St. Julien Second Growth properties designated in the 1855 classification. It is often referred to as a "super-second", though, because its wines are at a quality level approaching that of a First Growth. The chateau is not only considered one of the top wines in St. Julien, but also one of the best values. Leoville-Barton wines have a higher percentage of... More »

Dark crimson. Luscious. Some sweetness on the nose, and polish but pretty chewy finish.

In contrast to the 1989, the 1990 is denser, more tannic, muscular, and virile. It offers an opaque purple color, but not much charm or openness. The nose reluctantly offers up aromas of earth, spicy fruit, and wood. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, and loaded with extract and glycerin. However, it is also revealing formidable quantities of tannin, as well as a closed, backward style. This is somewhat perplexing in view of previous tastings of this wine. I still believe the 1990 to be an exceptional Leoville-Barton, certainly the best wine made after the 1982, and marginally superior to both the delicious 1985 and tannic 1986. However, it needs another 7-10 years of cellaring. In its youth, it is one of the least approachable 1990s.

Excellent -- very well balanced. Enjoyed it with some nice bone-in filets and good friends.

Vinfolio purchase, held two years. No decant. Mature color; integrated, balanced, long, and beautiful. Medium-full, roasted mushrooms, leather, and tobacco. Elegant texture. Great bottle. 12.5%. Open and enjoy now. And if you can, roast and salt bone marrow and spread on toast to enjoy with this classically aged Bordeaux. Just do it, you'll be happy.

Fruit forward nose, cherry and leather. Very well balanced, medium sweetness with a taste of raisins and leather. Tannins still a little strong, but drinking nicely. Will get better. Delicous, very well balanced, much more forward than the bottle we had at home.

Rich purple color, but a little smell of funk. Taste initially seemed ok (but not great), but died in the glass quickly. Maybe corked or badly handled over its nearly 20 years?

The Leoville Tasting
This was a tasting the the three properties that were separated at the turn of the century into Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Barton and Leoville Poyferre.  The tasting was blind and done by vintage.  Vintages tasted...

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
