1989 Pichon Lalande Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - Pauillac - Red - Second Growth

France - Bordeaux - Pauillac

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Chateau Pichon Lalande, known as one of the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, has been maintained by the same family for more than 250 years. Located in Pauillac, it was deemed a Second Growth wine estate during Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its location between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for growing grapes. These two masses of water help keep the air moving, which reduces... More »

($140-$165) Full, deep red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, currant leaf, tobacco, herbs and animal fur. Sweet, lush and lively; already showing lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes long, strong and lively, with firm tannins and slow-mounting persistence. Earlier bottles of this wine appeared to be a bit more exotic, even slightly animal, but this offers a lovely combination of purity and sheer ripeness. Drink over the next 15 years.

Very deep crimson with very evolved rim. Tealeaf nose and very ripe. Light nose with clean aromas. Bit soupy but rather rusty nails on the palate. Not the pure bite of the Pichon Barons. Smudgy. Furry tannins. Chewy finish.

Speaking of superior vintages, Pichon-Lalande's 1989, although not as profound as the 1995, 1994, 1986, 1983, or 1982, is a beautifully made wine. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a sweet, roasted nose of rich cassis fruit, herbs, and vanilla. Lush and round, this medium to full-bodied, nicely-textured, layered Pichon-Lalande possesses low acidity, outstanding ripeness, and beautiful purity and balance. It is already drinking surprisingly well, so owners should not hesitate to pull a cork. It should continue to offer rich, seductive drinking for another 15+ years.

Voluptuous and velvety. Dark ruby color. Intense aromas of blackberries, fresh mushrooms and dried herbs. Full-bodied, with loads of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. A big, youthful wine that needs time to mellow.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal.

Consistent notes. Med dark ruby/mahogany red; profound nose of primarily black fruit dominating tobacco & leather notes; similar & very complex flavors, well integrated mature soft tannins; good grip; very complex and long; beautifully balanced; extremely long finish; still vigorous and drinking well now with plenty of life ahead. A GREAT Bordeaux that has kept getting better in bottle!

Approaching maturity, Pichon-Lalande's1989 has a deep ruby color with absolutely no tannin. Not full bodied but delicately exqusitte! Drink now and love it!

Drinking nicely now, this is a good but not great example of this wine. Should be good for another 3 years or so.

This is what it feels like to have reached the top of the mountain folks. The vista is glorious, the weight of the tannic journey has been lifted and the integration of all elements, time and space has overcome the final precipice. Welcome to the peak my lovers of claret, come on in, the water?s just fine! This is as polished and seamless as Bordeaux gets and to me, represents what 'cellaring potential? is all about. Notions of graphite, lilacs, sweet currant fruit and aged tobacco dance to an elegant tune, with nary a rough edge to be found. Deft, and striking on all cylinders, enjoy this beauty now or over the next 5 years.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
