Red Bordeaux Blend - Fourth Growth
Producer Notes

Built in magnificent 18th century Louis XV style, Chateau Beychevelle sits in the St. Julien district of the Medoc, with neighbors including Chateau Gloria and Chateau St. Pierre. Awesome barnyard French aged red. Almost as good as the '75 and could go longer too!

Decanted a few minutes before service. Deep, semi-opaque purple with dark red, slightly browning edges. St. Julien scents of cassis, warm earth (according to one guest, sun-warmed bricks), cedar, graphite and rich fruit. Seems much the same as my first bottle of this vintage, ten years ago - young, sweet, deep, friendly, and ripe - not "cussed" (JR's term) as a few '86s seem to remain. Lacks the complexity of top growths, but a fine showing.

Wonderful year for Bordeaux. Delicious core of ripe dark berry and plum. Framed by notes of chalk, leather and bacon fat. Medium bodied but great depth and complexity. Fully integrated tannins provide a smooth, lengthy finish. Great elegance to this Bordeaux. Sadly, my last bottle of '86 Bordeaux!

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
