Built in magnificent 18th century Louis XV style, Château Beychevelle sits in the St. Julien district of the Médoc, with neighbors including Château Gloria and Château St. Pierre. The name Beychevelle was derived from the expression "Baisse-Vaille" meaning "lower sails". A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
