1982 Gruaud Larose Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - St Julien - Red - Second Growth

France - Bordeaux - St Julien

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

The phrase "The King of Wines..." adorns its label, but this isn't Bordeaux Budweiser. In fact, St. Julien's Second-Growth-classified Chateau Gruaud Larose was known as "the wine of kings" back in the late 1700s and continues this legacy today. The most notable recent example is President Chirac serving 1990 Gruaud Larose to President Clinton at Parisian bistro L'Ami Louis in June, 1999. ... More »

slightly corked bottle with some telltale 'wet-cardbord' notes and diminished fruit. Not a good representation (prior bottle one year ago rated 96 with drink dates of 2007-2029)

What the 1988 Sassicaia is in Sideways, this wine is to me. I have tried to relive the experience of my first bottle of 1982 Gruaud Larose many times and never had that moment of revelation again. However, it is always a wonderful wine and unbelievable value for an '82 Bordeaux.

A slightly musty under-taste could not hide the fact that this is a phenomenally big, explosive wine of great concentration and complexity. 93-96

Excellent balance and beautiful finesse. Such great aromas of plum and leather, along with delicate earth tones. The fruit structure is amazing and is holding up so nicely. It has a long finish with soft tannins and lively fruit with a wonderful purity about it. I highly recommend this gem of a bordeaux!!

RP: A massive wine that is cearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purpoole color offersw up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux's I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodiewd, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for anohter 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singuarly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status.

Wow. Beautiful ruby-garnet with slight ambering at the edges. Awesome nose of leather, tar, earth, meat and black fruit. On the palate, lots of acidity and mellow tannins, and big, mature black fruit with a complex, spicy (mint? herbs?) finish. Long finish. Plenty of spunk left in this wine, though time has clearly mellowed what must have been hard to drink a couple of decades ago. Takes a SOLID three hours in a decanter to really open up.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
