France - Bordeaux - St Estephe

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Intensely dark with a murky dull reflection. The nose is powerful, intense aromas of over-ripe fruit, plum compote, rhubarb jam and black cherry. Magnificent purity, huge fruit character, mild tannin and refreshing acidity. Beautiful, opulent mouthfeel with loads of glycerol leading into a long finish. This wine is drinking like its ten years old. This will continue to improve for many years to come.

Decanted for 2 hours, rinsed out bottle, refilled and brought to dinner. Would not believe this wine is 31 years old. A fabulous clean nose of beautiful fresh berries, wonderful mouthfeel with beautiful soft well integrated tannins and a long smooth and delicious finish. Will drink well for many years to come. Unfortunately it is my last bottle. Fabulous wine.

Very beautiful Bordeaux. Silky smooth. All integrated. You can enjoy it now to many years later.

Medium ruby with paler rim. Show some age but not 28 years! Medium strong fruit of blackcurrant, blackberries. Eventually more violets and leather nose with sweeter nose of oak. Tannin is molten and integrated, with balanced acidity. Very nice cabernet sauvignon, very balanced and matured. The wine open up more after an hour and should continue to go forward for an other hour. Aftertaste medium and growing, but not as impressive as expected.

This wine never disappoints. I let it breathe for 3 hours and it was smooth as silk, smoky, pencil shavings melded with dark fruits in a unique, absolutely delicious. To make it even better, we had it at BLT steak with Kobe steak and multiple sides. This goes with rich food incredibly well. No sign of decline at all

Had this wine with a friend in a hotel cocktail lounge. Under these circumstances, not a lot of not taking and generally enjoyment took precedence over concentration! However, the Cos was, as always, excellent.

A great bottle. Most tannins are resolved. Almost sweet and very smooth. Drink now and through next 2-3 years.

My red wine of the night. Pretty nose on shot leather, rust, saw dust, soured cherries, lavender, and dried flowers. Jolting acid provides grip, a balanced structure on the tongue, and a 45 second finish. A ton of stuffing. Retasted the end of the night (it would have been open for about 4 hours) and this wine was still kicking, a nice surprise as all of the other older Cos and PC were dying in the glass.

RP: THis 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied with wsweet tannins, a medium to full-body mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10+ years.

A silky smooth, delicious Bordeaux. Hints of spice through the long finish. A fully mature wine from a great vintage. This is why we love Bordeaux.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
