Producer Notes

Chateau Calon-Segur is a 3eme Cru Classe estate located in St. Estephe. The property consists of a 74-hectare vineyard that grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Mid shoulder fill, after removing the foil I found that a generous amount of wine had seeped out over time covering the top of the cork. The cork itself came out in three pieces although in great condition for over sixty years old. Wine was decanted, heavy sediment present. Rusty orange in color, murky throughout and still ever so slightly opaque at the core. The nose shows dried herbs and dusty earth, cigar box, dried cranberries, and some ripe red fruit in the background although faint. First impression on the palate is that of sweet, ripe red fruit, dusty and slightly herbal but all in a good way. Medium to full Bodied, It's now been 30 minutes and the the fruit intensifies as the wine opens up. This is a great mature Bordeaux, the tannins have almost entirely melted away and just a gentle kiss of acidity gives the wine impeccable balance. There is plenty on the finish here which carries on for quite some time. Exceptional Wine !!!

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
