1991 Beringer - Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley 1991 Beringer - Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
|
91
Classic cab. Deep ruby color ... Huge nose filled the room with blackcurrant fruit ... plus on closer inspection, oak and just a tad vegetal (a little terroir?). Classic flavor, long finish and plenty of tannic structure. Breathing made it even better. Plenty of time left in this wine. NOTE: corks of both bottles broke halfway out ... plus a lot of sediment. Decanting is a must. |

1991 Renaissance - Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest
USA - California - Sierra Foothills 1991 Renaissance - Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest
|
A distinctive pale orange color in the glass, this wine has an astonishing nose of cloves, orange rind and fresh honey. In the mouth it is lightly sweet with no hint of syrupiness, and remarkable acidity given its age. Its primary flavors are of orange blossom and honey, both of which linger with herbal tones on a nice finish. This is quite a distinctive wine that may not have the depth and complexity of some of the world's great dessert wines, but could compete with many of them on personality alone. 1991 Henschke - Shiraz Hill of Grace
Australia - South Australia - Eden Valley 1991 Henschke - Shiraz Hill of Grace
|
94+
Medium plus red with a haunting bouquet of spearmint, plum, earth, minerals, and a trace of unsweetened chocolate. Powerful, unevolved fruit in the mouth with moderate tannin and sufficient acidity for continued cellaring. Excellent length. 100% Shiraz grown from ungrafted vines over a century old (they were planted circa the 1860s). The Henschke's rate the 1991 vintage as an excellent one for their Hill of Grace Shiraz. HoG is a rapier compared to the Grange?s broadsword. Still not quite fully mature - drink now to 2015. |

1991 Dampierre, Comte Audoin de - Cuvee Prestige
France - Champagne 1991 Dampierre, Comte Audoin de - Cuvee Prestige
|

This Champagne is only available in magnum and is composed of wine that only comes from Grand Cru vineyards. Attractively packaged, the cork is held in solely by twine and the bottle is signed by the Comte. A small pair of golden scissors accompanies the bottle ? the scissors are used to cut off the twine. This is the French consulate?s worldwide house brand. The wine delivers what the packaging promises. Deep strong flavors of bread dough and white fruits offset by virtually perfect acidity. There is no hurry to drink this wine ? it has a least a decade of life left. Quite an achievement for 1991 Champagne. |

An attractive, (in a strange way) bouquet of raisiny bourbon barrels and light red fruits. Tannins overwhelm what little fruit there is in the mouth. Drink up. |

Black-blood red colored slightly cloudy wine with a big almost Burgundian nose of boiled calamari, dark plum, herbs, deep dark fruits, dark cassis, and bitter chocolate. Richly elegant with plenty of power and excellent length. Drink now to 2015. Really quite Burgundian in profile ? and that is far from a criticism. |

For the most part, 1991 is one of Bordeaux's forgotten vintages. When the '91 was first released, it presented as a very good wine but was really nothing to get too excited about except by people who prefer to read labels rather than actually drink the wine. Now mature, the 91 still fails to excite. Garnet colored wine turning brown at the edges. Very advanced bouquet with sour cherry, bell pepper, and mint nuances. Reminds me of the 1967 Latour I had recently but the '67 was better. More power than one expects on the palate with surprisingly youthful fruit and good acidity. A Jekyll and Hyde wine. |

1991 Shafer - Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select
USA - California - Napa - Stags Leap District 1991 Shafer - Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select
|
90
Fully mature (a little over the hill even) but still retaining good color. Rose, allspice, mincemeat, and vaguely fruity aromatics. Dusty tannins. Light on the palate while the wine?s structure still retains considerable vitality. That?s not a good combination. The wine lacks sufficient concentration for any more cellaring. Drink up. |

Purchased 2 bottles from POP's 10/05. (020000) Had first bottle in May, 2007. One of the most memorable (if not the most memorable) wines I have had. Amazingly mellow and food friendly in a classic left bank Bordeaux style. Although richly textured now with 16 years of age on the bottle, still has plenty of fruit and will definitely last another decade at its peak (maybe longer?). A true classic. ***** Purchased another 3 bottles from JJ Buckley 11/07. (0225) |

Drank with Sergio and Tui. Decanted about 2-3 hours. This bottle may have had some heat damage, did not show nearly as well as previous bottle last year (95pts). Finish was a bit abrupt and showed signs of seepage from truck delivery. Stil was very full and very big. Lovely cassis and minerality. Very old world style, best CA for me. If finish came around would have put in the A rank, but for now will not rate as think the wine is better than this bottle showed. |
