I have loved every vintage produced of this luscious unfined/unfiltered blend of equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese. The nose of this wine fills the room with aromas of roasted plum, smoke, black tea, cassis, earth, black cherry, some leather, chalk, and minerals. Could easily be mistaken for a new wave Right Bank Bordeaux but it has the acidity that could only come from Italy. Black red color with thin, pigmented legs. The wine delivers concentrated yet elegant flavor with virtually perfect acidity and seemingly light tannins. Gorgeous at present but will repay up to a decade of cellaring. Not quite as concentrated of a blockbuster as in prior years ? the '97 remains potentially the best '97 from all of Central Italy. Still, I don'tthink you could have too much of this wine in the cellar.

I don'tknow what happened with this wine. 2001 was a very fine vintage in Central Italy so that is not the problem. Prior vintages of Lamborghini (the 1997 especially) have blown me away with their power and deeply concentrated fruit. The 2001 is a pale imitation of the prior vintages. I have tried to convince myself there is something wrong with this wine but there is not ? its simply not very good. A blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, the 2001 is a deeply colored wine with a few thick legs showing moderate coloration. A full but slightly funky nose of spice, mint, vanilla, coffee, and muted dark fruits with a streak of greenness running throughout. Nicely plush in the mouth but the wine fades fast. I suspect other bottles will be better but the risk adverse consumer would be well advised to consider purchasing past vintages of this wine rather than the 2001. Presents like an off vintage Pomerol. Low acidity and light tannins.

Still youthful with plenty of fruit, moderate finish. A bit tart.

Very funky/spicy on the nose, but totally closed up after a minute in the glass. Tannin/acid were to high to give anything on the palate. Hold

Light with clear taste

Old sweat socks in the nose. Thin with slightly dirty flavors in the mouth. Suitable for cooking.

Flat. Any nuance or fruit is long gone. Dumped bottled.

Room-filling aromas of sweet berry fruit and perfectly integrated oak and a mouth-coating cascade of ripe fruit, powerful, dense, and sensual tannins in a swelling flow of unrelieved pleasure. I would be very surprised if this wine did not last another two decades.

Oy vey. Thankfully this wine was close to last, because it was akin to rubbing the tongue with sand paper. Jammy cherry/crushed berry and spice on the nose. So super tannic that it sucks the blood out from the tongue/inner cheeks! Put this one down for a while.

Very dark red with ruby hues. Nose reminds of leather, blackberry, mediterranean herbs, juniper. Very tannic mouth. Nice and typical.
