This wine is a blend of Aragones, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon. It ages in both American and French oak barrels for 9 months. This wine got 17,5 points (out of 20) from the Portuguese magazine Wine Blue. Wine Enthusiast gave 91 points...but I'll give it 84. Decanted for 1 hour. I could smell the wonderful fruity aromas (cherries, cassis and flowers) while pouring it in the decanter. I thought this would be a wonnderful wine based on the lovely nose. But, everything changed 1 hour later. The nose was still good, but on the palate the wine became dull and totally mute. Also, a bit thin and hollow on the mid-palate. The wine simply died after 2 hours...no palate and no nose. If you already have this wine in your cellar, I recommend you to not decant it. I won't buy it again. |

This wine is an unusual blend of 45% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest coming from a Portuguese field blend. Lafite Rothschild owns this Quinta. As a result, there is enough money available for this wine to see a little new oak but much of its upbringing is in old oak casks (which therefore impart little if any oak flavors). The wine has muffled dried out red fruit aromas with a sour finish. Avoid. |

The nose on this deep dark red wine is very restrained after opening the bottle, but with time gives way to herbal notes, combined with cassis, cherry, and some earthy coffee bean aromas. Big oak at first that show with vanilla and tannin. I feared that this might just be an oak monster, but with time it really developed into something interesting. Flavors of dark red fruits, chocolate, coffee, and an underlying herbalness, make this wine stand out from it's peers. While a big wine at 14.5% it handles it very well and I would love to see its development in about 4-5 years. |

Cloudy with a deep red color. Nose shows black raspberry, jammy, with light herbal notes. In the mouth the tannins need time to relax, and the finish is quite warm. Deep blackberry and raspberry flavors followed by black pepper. 3.5/5 |

2004 Callabriga - Alentejo
Portugal - Alentejano - Alentejo 2004 Callabriga - Alentejo

Beautiful medium intense color to this wine with a nose that inviting from the start reminding me of my mothers raspberry rhubarb compote! Fresh candied raspberry and cherry, with hints of cinnamon, dusty anise, and almost a peppermint herbiness. In the mouth this wine is full of acidity and fine, fine tannins that coat and cover the mouth. Pure red fruit flavors with raspberry, cherry, red currant and spice box finish. The acidity on this wine is strong and therefore makes me think of lighter meats, and most likely would make a great pairing for Porco Alentejano. 3.5/5 |

Deep dark purple with hints of red. Just opened and very closed with chokecherry notes, basalmic, pepper, earth and smoke. Tannins are big and firm yet very fine. Medium acidity helps frame the flavors of blackpepper, anise, chokecherry, black cherry, and some wood. Big wine needing a few years to calm down. 3.5/5 |

Brilliant medium red color and intensity. I love the nose on this though the wine needs much time to open fully. Chocolate, baked black raspberry custard, with cinnamon, lush spice box and further dark fruits. In the mouth the wine is soft with firm tannins and good acid that seem to meld together in a lush medley of dark fruits. Lush black cherry, berry and and touches of gravel, allspice and clove. Light enough though for a piece of chicken, or better yet a black current glazed duck breast. Nice wine with a reserved tone that is a nice break from some of the heavier wines from this area. 4/5 |

Chocolate and raspberry nose on this monster. Very rich and well made if not a little big. In the mouth black raspberry, coffee, chocolate, and dark spices come out. A well made wine that really needs a few hours to open up fully. I would like to try it over the course of a day to see how it evolves. |

The nose on this wine is it's best quality with anise, meat, mint, clove and mixed raspberry aromas. In the mouth this is a big wine with thick acidity and unctuous qualities. Black liquorice, molasses, black pepper and chocolate lead me to believe that this could be a very fun wine. But the alcohol seems to get in the way of the fruit and other fun flavors. Mixed emotions on this one, and overall I think it's worth trying. |

Deep dark purple in color. The nose is like has smoke, light mint notes, dried dates, grapes, and towards the finish hints of basalmic and blueberries show up. Rich in the mouth with thick tannins and high glycerin. Very modern in the mouth with vanilla, chocolate, big ripe fruits of raspberry and cherry. The finish rounds itself up with some herbal notes that help to balance out the heavy fruit. 4/5 |
